Thomas Affleck was born in Dumfries, Scotland, and immigrated to New York in 1832. He studied agriculture and general sciences while he lived on the East coast. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1840, he became editor of the Western Farmer and Gardener, a widely circulated agricultural periodical in the West. The Airlie Plantation was owned and operated by James Green Carson, who moved across the Mississippi River from Canebrake Plantation in Adams County, Mississippi, around 1846 with his wife Catherine Waller Carson and family. The Carsons fled to Texas during the Civil War, and James Green Carson died of diphtheria in Tyler, Texas.
